A Key Project for Solar Electrification in The Gambia 🌍☀️

The construction of the OIC Bertil Harding Highway represents a significant advancement in The Gambia's transport infrastructure, facilitating smoother traffic flow for the Gambian population. To improve the safety of road users and nearby residents, over 1,148 solar-powered streetlights by Fonroche Lighting were installed. These autonomous LED streetlights provide a sustainable and intelligent solar public lighting solution, enhancing both user safety and public health. This project showcases an effective model for equipping all types of infrastructure while respecting the environment.

Thanks to this lighting system, the highway’s two lanes and its associated facilities benefit from reliable illumination 365 nights a year, while also reducing electricity demand.

Solar Solutions Tailored to Local Needs 🔋💡

Fonroche Lighting designed and delivered a comprehensive and innovative solar lighting system tailored to the project’s specific requirements:

  • Autonomous LED solar streetlights: Reliable performance without connection to the national power grid.
  • High-performance batteries: Capable of storing enough energy to ensure continuous lighting, even under challenging weather conditions.
  • Photovoltaic panels: Generating clean, renewable energy with zero greenhouse gas emissions.

This design illustrates the benefits of off-grid solutions for developing countries like The Gambia.

Benefits for The Gambia and Its Citizens 🌟

  • Enhanced safety: Reliable public lighting reduces the risk of accidents and improves security for nearby communities.
  • Economic and social development: This structuring project creates jobs, supports local industries, and improves infrastructure for sustainable growth.
  • Rural electrification: This project can serve as a model for remote villages and rural areas in The Gambia and neighboring countries like Guinea-Bissau or the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The solar lighting project for the OIC Bertil Harding Highway in The Gambia stands out with impressive figures. Over a total length of 22 kilometers, the infrastructure is now illuminated by 1,148 autonomous solar streetlights, providing consistent and reliable lighting. By utilizing this innovative and environmentally friendly technology, the project significantly contributes to reducing CO₂ emissions, equivalent to several tons annually. Commissioned in 2024, this modern and sustainable system marks a significant milestone in the country’s electrification and energy transition.
