The University of Bordeaux, one of the largest universities in France and a key player in the Bordeaux metropolitan area, has recently taken an innovative step in public lighting.
Faced with challenges related to security, sustainability, energy efficiency, and reducing electricity consumption, the institution turned to Fonroche Lighting to implement an innovative solar public lighting solution. This initiative is part of the energy transition and aims to reduce reliance on the traditional electrical grid.

 

A large-scale project for a safer and greener campus

To successfully carry out this ambitious project, the University of Bordeaux enlisted the services of the public purchasing agency UGAP (Union des Groupements d'Achats Publics) to acquire intelligent solar streetlights. This large-scale program enabled the installation of 300 fully autonomous solar streetlights across its 21 sites, including locations outside the main site in Bordeaux. These installations are part of a broader sustainable development strategy and energy transition across the university centers of the Bordeaux Academy.

Thanks to the 2020 Economic Recovery Plan, the University accelerated the modernization of its lighting infrastructure by adopting sustainable solar technology, replacing outdated and energy-intensive systems. This plan also contributes to the institution's environmental goals, particularly a significant reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030.

 

Multiple challenges, innovative solutions

Before the launch of this solar public lighting project, the University faced several major issues:

  • Vandalism and theft: Traditional infrastructure connected to the electrical grid was frequently targeted by damage, such as cable thefts.
  • Insecurity: Poorly lit areas posed risks to students and staff, who were victims of assaults on campus.
  • Aging infrastructure: The existing lighting network was obsolete, leading to increased maintenance and technical intervention needs. Modernization became urgent.
  • High energy costs: Rising energy prices placed a heavy burden on the University's budget.
