The University of Bordeaux, one of the largest universities in France and a key player in the Bordeaux metropolitan area, has recently taken an innovative step in public lighting.
Faced with challenges related to security, sustainability, energy efficiency, and reducing electricity consumption, the institution turned to Fonroche Lighting to implement an innovative solar public lighting solution. This initiative is part of the energy transition and aims to reduce reliance on the traditional electrical grid.
A large-scale project for a safer and greener campus
To successfully carry out this ambitious project, the University of Bordeaux enlisted the services of the public purchasing agency UGAP (Union des Groupements d'Achats Publics) to acquire intelligent solar streetlights. This large-scale program enabled the installation of 300 fully autonomous solar streetlights across its 21 sites, including locations outside the main site in Bordeaux. These installations are part of a broader sustainable development strategy and energy transition across the university centers of the Bordeaux Academy.
Thanks to the 2020 Economic Recovery Plan, the University accelerated the modernization of its lighting infrastructure by adopting sustainable solar technology, replacing outdated and energy-intensive systems. This plan also contributes to the institution's environmental goals, particularly a significant reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030.
Multiple challenges, innovative solutions
Before the launch of this solar public lighting project, the University faced several major issues:
- Vandalism and theft: Traditional infrastructure connected to the electrical grid was frequently targeted by damage, such as cable thefts.
- Insecurity: Poorly lit areas posed risks to students and staff, who were victims of assaults on campus.
- Aging infrastructure: The existing lighting network was obsolete, leading to increased maintenance and technical intervention needs. Modernization became urgent.
- High energy costs: Rising energy prices placed a heavy burden on the University's budget.
The benefits of Fonroche Lighting's solar solution
The installation of autonomous solar streetlights had numerous positive impacts on several levels:
-
Reduced vandalism: The robust design of the streetlights and the absence of visible wiring significantly reduced vandalism and theft while ensuring better management of the infrastructure.
-
Improved safety: Reliable, high-performance, and uninterrupted lighting throughout the night enhanced the safety of public and pedestrian areas on campus, especially for students and night workers.
-
Modernization of infrastructure: Replacing the old systems with solar panels significantly reduced energy consumption costs and resolved maintenance issues.
- Significant savings: The implementation of sustainable lighting powered by solar energy allowed the University to lower its lighting bills and contributed to the stability of the institution’s operating budget.
- Environmental commitment: This project allows the University to strengthen its image as a committed player in sustainable development and the ecological transition. The University aims to reduce its carbon emissions by 40% by 2030, while adopting energy consumption solutions that are environmentally friendly.
A step forward in the energy transition
By collaborating with renewable energy specialists like Fonroche Lighting, the University of Bordeaux is fully embracing the energy transition. This exemplary project demonstrates how public institutions, like a large university, can combine technological innovation, public safety, and environmental responsibility to provide an optimal and sustainable study environment for its students.
Through this partnership with solar energy experts, the University of Bordeaux now offers a safer and more environmentally friendly campus. With this initiative, it positions itself as a pioneering and exemplary player in the field of solar public lighting, contributing to the success of Bordeaux Métropole's energy transition.
